Learning you are pregnant, especially if it’s unplanned, can bring up many unexpected emotions.

You may experience many emotions at the same time. Emotions can change, and often change quickly, with an unplanned pregnancy. Reacting to our emotions by making quick decisions, can sometime lead to regret.

Abortion may seem like your only option. Before you move forward with this choice, you should educate yourself about the different types of abortion, the procedures and their risks. Abortion is not just a simple procedure and may contribute to physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual distress.

Learn about adoption to see if it’s the best choice for you.

Making an adoption plan can be a very empowering choice. Financial assistance for medical and living expenses is sometimes available for the birth mother, along with many other benefits.

Questions To Ask Yourself Before Choosing Adoption

  • Will I be able to properly support my child?

  • Do I want my child to grow up in a two-parent household?

  • How much contact would I want with my child after the adoption?

  • Will the father of my child be involved in the process?

  • Will I get to choose the family my child goes to?

Know The Most Common Types Of Adoption Plans:

Open Adoption

Open adoptions are relatively common and provide the most contact between the birth mother and the adoptive family. Through an open adoption you will have more interaction with the adoptive family for example pictures, letters and sometimes in-person family events.

Semi-Open Adoption

Interaction between the birth mother and the adoptive family is facilitated by a third party which is usually the adoption agency or attorney. All semi-open adoptions are different, and the level of contact and relationship you have with the adoptive family can vary.

Closed Adoption

Process by which an infant is adopted, and the record of the biological parent(s) is kept sealed. Closed adoptions don’t allow for ongoing contact between the birth parents and adoptive family. The entire adoption is facilitated by an agency

or other intermediaries.

Kinship care refers to grandparents, other relatives and even family friends who can care for your child for a specific time.

The NY State Office of Children and Family Services offers the Kinship Guardianship Assistance Program where the guardian can make all necessary decisions for the child, including medical and educational decisions. For a child not free for adoption, parental rights are still retained by the birth parents. The child may maintain contact with the parents, including visits, if appropriate to the circumstances.

The Safe Haven law says that a baby can be abandoned at a safe location.

New York State’s Abandoned Infant Protection Act allows a parent to abandon a newborn baby up to 30 days of age anonymously and without fear of prosecution -- if the baby is abandoned in a safe manner.

A parent is not guilty of a crime if the infant is left with an appropriate person or in a suitable location and the parent promptly notifies an appropriate person of the infant’s location. A hospital, staffed police or fire station are examples of safe and suitable choices.

A person leaving an infant under this law is not required to give his or her name.
